Knowing your body type provides the key to proper nutrition and exercise for your specific body type, as well as a surprisingly specific and accurate personality profile. Body type classification systems have been around for decades. However, the popular body type systems – such as ayurvedic, Abravanel, and somatypes – have only 3 or 4 different types, and claim that most people are some combination of 2 or more of the types, which can be very confusing. That’s because there are actually 25 different and distinct body types.
What’s so different between each body type? The short answer is – everything! Your body shape, where you gain weight, and how your musculature responds to different exercise are well known physical aspects of body types. The best time of day to exercise, and the most productive types of exercise, vary by body type as well.
Foods that are very supportive of your body type may be stressful for other body types to digest, or the best time of day for consuming fruits, proteins, and other foods may be very different for other body types. Each body type has a different path to weight loss – most popular commercial diet programs work well for the Adrenal body type, but can actually cause other body types to gain weight.
The in-depth personality profile of the 25 body type system provides the biggest surprise to most. The feedback I most often hear is, “How can you know me so well?” The profile details your personality characteristics and motivations. It also identifies the core emotional issues for your body type, which enables you to release them with essential oils.
How can there be 25 unique body types?
There are 25 different body types because this is the total number of glands, organs and systems in the body plus one type that represents a balance between all the glands, organs and systems. Any one of these can be dominant, which is what determines a body type.
The body is controlled by the glandular system via the hormones. The strongest glands are the pituitary, thyroid and adrenals. The pituitary is the master gland that tells all the other glands what to do; the glands in turn tell the organs and systems what to do. Information comes into the body via the thalamus which acts like a mail room, sorting and sending information where it needs to go. Anything it does not know what to do with gets sent down to the hypothalamus, which takes the information into its cave and comes up with a plan that it sends down to the pituitary to implement. While we generally think it is the brain that controls the body, the reality is the brain is a data storage center, and the hypothalamus is ultimately in charge.
The thyroid gland is responsible for metabolism and is stimulated by sugar and carbs. The adrenal glands are the strongest glands and are responsible for secreting cortisol, necessary for the fight or flight response. Their job is to keep us safe and are stimulated by salt and beef. The adrenals and thyroid act as counter balancers for each other. When stressed, the adrenals create more heat – even giving rise to hot flashes, while the thyroid runs cold.
These 3 glands have distinctly different weight gain patterns, food cravings, eating patterns, and personality characteristics. As I started working with these 3 body types, I quickly found people who did not fit into these 3 profiles. Some people seemed to be a blend of two types, some were close, but not quite, and others had characteristics of all 3. I was introduced to another typing system that had 8 body types – the 3 types I had been working with plus 5 more including Pancreas and Balanced. As I worked with this system, I found the same thing I found with every other typing system I had explored and that was people who did not fit into the categories and appeared to be a combination type.
When I looked at the last typing system and Pancreas was a type, I thought, “if the pancreas can be dominant, why can’t the liver or spleen be dominant?” This opened the door to my exploring the other organs, as well as the systems like lymph and blood. One by one, I discovered different body types, each with their own distinctive profile, until finally there were 25. In 20 years, I have not come across anyone who did not fit into one of these body types, nor have I discovered any additional types.
I started out looking for the diet that would best support the body. I found different authorities and diet/nutrition books to be contradictory. I also found in working with patients, as well as my own personal experience, that a food that is good for one person was not necessarily good for another. I found food combinations and time of day fruit was eaten also made a difference. In testing different people, I found a common denominator, and that was the dominant gland, organ, or system. Here I found consistency, not only in the foods that best supported the body, the best time of day to eat them, and food cravings, but personality characteristics as well. Hence, a body type profile!
Body type in some cases can be determined through physical characteristics and weight gain patterns. In other cases, personality strengths and challenges that correspond to the dominant glandular function are used to determine body type.
